Machame camp

Machame Camp is the first overnight stop on the Machame Route, located at about 3,000 meters (9,843 ft). It sits in a lush rainforest with tall trees, misty air, and occasional rain. After a steady hike from the gate, climbers rest here, enjoy meals, and begin acclimatizing before continuing the journey up Mount Kilimanjaro.

Shira camp

Shira Camp is the second stop on the Machame Route, located at about 3,850 meters (12,631 ft) on the Shira Plateau. The landscape opens up from rainforest to heath and moorland, offering wide views of Mount Kilimanjaro and surrounding plains. It’s an important acclimatization point where climbers rest and adjust to the higher altitude before continuing upward.

Barranco camp

Barranco Camp is located at about 3,960 meters (12,992 ft) on the Machame Route. It sits in a scenic valley below the Barranco Wall, surrounded by giant groundsels and unique alpine vegetation. This camp is a key acclimatization stop, where climbers rest and prepare for the climb up the Barranco Wall the next day.

Barafu camp

Barafu Camp is the final base camp on the Machame Route, located at about 4,673 meters (15,331 ft). The landscape is rocky, cold, and exposed, with strong winds and little vegetation. Climbers rest here for a few hours before starting the midnight summit attempt to Uhuru Peak.

Mweka camp

Mweka Camp is located at about 3,100 meters (10,170 ft) on the descent route of Mount Kilimanjaro. Surrounded by lush rainforest, it is the final overnight stop after the summit. Climbers rest here before continuing down to Mweka Gate the next day.
